Golden Air Quality October 12 to 19, 2018

Golden Air Quality Readings October 12 to 19, 2018 Slash burning on the west bench south of Golden contributed to particulate air pollution during the second week in October 2018. Monday and Tuesday saw spikes in PM2.5 even at the town air monitoring station near the hospital. The venting index looked good when these fires were lit, however there were many slash piles lit and smoke filled the valley for a time. Residents of the Town of Golden are reminded that to reduce neighbourhood smoke exposure, burning yard waste in backyards in town is prohibited by bylaw.

Current Air Quality Readings in Golden

How to find current and past data on air quality in Golden BC   The BC Ministry of Environment operates an air quality monitoring station in Golden. This station, located next to Golden hospital helipad, measures fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) in the air. It gives us an idea of the air quality in the area around the hospital. Other neighbourhoods in Golden may experience higher or lower levels of air pollution depending on their location near point sources of emissions. Current and past readings from this station can be viewed at this link: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/epd/bcairquality/data/station.html?id=E292149 The graphs show levels of very fine particulates (PM2.5) mostly coming from […]

High Particulates in Golden’s Air from Wildfire Smoke July 28 to August 3, 2017

Posted under: Air Quality,Current Data

Wildfires in the region continue to create very poor air quality conditions in the Golden area. Fine particulates measured at the Golden Hospital have been well above objectives. Last week levels were more than double acceptable limits on several days. The provincial Ministry of Environment and Interior Health has issued a “Smoky Skies Bulletin” for most of southern BC. This advises residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. If you are experiencing difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways contact your health care provider. Exposure to fine particulates is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have […]

Recent Air Quality Data for Golden BC March 10-17, 2017

Posted under: Air Quality,Current Data

Great to see the dust levels down to acceptable levels last week. Of course this is mainly because we had some good precipitation (too much for some low lying buildings or people without rain boots!) As soon as the roads dry out the dust starts kicking up, especially if the winds are high. Ah, the lovely month of March! We can all help out on those dry days by not driving too fast on dusty roads in town. Check behind you to see if the pedestrians are choking – if so, please slow down. Thanks for helping to keep Golden’s air breathable.

Recent Air Quality Data in Golden February 3 to 9, 2017

Last week the cold weather continued and many of us in Golden were keeping our wood stoves stoked up to keep warm. Unfortunately, excessive smoke affected air quality. The monitoring station at the hospital registered levels of fine particulates that were well above provincial objectives on four days last week. This presents a hazard to the health of residents, especially those who are more vulnerable. We can avoid this if everyone made sure to use only very dry wood, and give the fire lots of air at all times. Please do not try to hold fires overnight by smouldering your wood. If your wood stove is an older […]

Golden Air Quality Monitoring Station Data  February 27 to March 4, 2016 The end of February in Golden was still dusty and smoky sending the monitor up as high as 120 micrograms per cubic meter on Feb 28th. Then a combination of warmer weather with rain and Town street sweeping got things back down to acceptable levels. Those folks who spark up the wood stoves around dinner time and let them smoke rather than burning that wood nice and hot, still contribute to poorer air in each evening. Let’s try to pay attention to that and give us all a chance to breathe the sweet spring air!   […]

Dust Advisories Issued for Golden

Posted under: Air Quality,Current Data

(February 26th 2016 – Kamloops) The Ministry of Environment has continued a Dust Advisory issued Tuesday February 23, 2016 for Golden because of high concentrations of dust that are expected to persist until there is a change in weather conditions. The Ministry recommends that residents avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Staying indoors with windows and doors closed helps to reduce exposure. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as breathing or lung conditions, hay fever, asthma or persons who react strongly to dust. If you are experiencing symptoms such as continuing eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of […]

Golden Air Quality This Past Week   This week we are reporting the PM10 data. This is a combination of the finer particles from burning and coarser particles like road dust. The objective for PM10 is to keep it below 50 micrograms per cubic meter. On Friday, the evening traffic on dry roads really started to kick up the fine dust. There were several provincial air quality advisories last year because of road dust. The Town of Golden is working to try to reduce the dust in the spring. Slowing down on the roads will help as well. We all want to breathe clean air. Access More Data […]
