Airshed Management Planning

The well-being, economic prosperity and environmental health of Golden and the Columbia Valley are dependent upon many factors including clean air.

A draft Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) has been prepared that provides background information, guidance and strategic action to improve air quality in the Town of Golden and the surrounding air shed of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District Area A (CSRD A). It details a vision, broad goals, specific initiatives and performance measures to assist our communities in achieving the best air quality possible for present and future generations.

Actions that will reduce emissions of common local air contaminants and increase energy efficiency are the focus of the plan. These actions include ensuring more efficient wood burning practices, reducing overall fuel consumption, using cleaner fuels, installing emission control technologies, and controlling fugitive dust.  Engaging and working closely with local industry to monitor air pollution releases and explore opportunities for emissions reduction is essential. Other key aspects of the plan include address information gathering and sharing, public education, conducting ongoing research and enhancing public engagement.

In many cases these actions will also contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions which has global implications. Certain emission sources such as road dust, residential wood burning, and industrial releases that contribute to locally high particulate matter levels are concerns that are not captured by GHG reduction programs. In addition, attention to local air quality can often provide a more direct motivating factor for individual and institutional action.

This plan will be further developed through collaboration among several organizations, institutions, government jurisdictions and individual citizens working together in a round table format.  Refinement of indicators and development of more detailed and additional strategies are necessary.
